Q&A with Neapco’s 2023 Summer Intern Class

Neapco is proud to offer a robust internship program for young professionals to help them get their foot in the door of the ever-evolving automotive industry.

This summer we welcomed four incredible interns to our Farmington Hills and Belleville locations — supporting our sales, purchasing and engineering departments. From learning from the teams on the floor to engaging with our leadership team to supporting our community initiatives, the group had countless opportunities to become ingrained in daily life at Neapco.

In this article, we highlight their personal experiences as they share the lessons they learned along the way and how the opportunity has put them on a path to achieving their career goals.

Luke Deskins — Purchasing Intern

Tell us about yourself.

I am from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and am currently a student at the University of Michigan pursuing a business degree at the Ross School of Business. I am unsure of what I want to do after college so I am exploring my options.

What drew you to Neapco?

I applied for this internship to gain more business experience and knowledge. Many things drew me to Neapco, but the internship’s hybrid schedule is what reeled me in. I was very interested in experiencing what working in both environments would be like.

What is the most important lesson you learned at Neapco?

The most important lesson I learned is to ask questions any time I have them. Before coming to Neapco, I tried to figure things out on my own rather than ask for help when I didn’t understand something. This internship helped me become more comfortable with asking questions — showing me that it can lead to even more learning opportunities.

Karlie Koskos — Sales Intern

Tell us about yourself.

I am from Macomb, Michigan, and will be an incoming senior at Michigan State University. I am currently pursuing a degree in finance and hope to work in sales within the automotive or medical device industry post-graduation.

What is the most important lesson you learned at Neapco?

My time at Neapco reinforced the importance of communication in the workplace as it helps maintain strong relationships. Consistent communication ensures issues are resolved quickly and prevented in the future, and also helps keep customers in the loop.

What did you enjoy most about working at Neapco?

The people! I was fortunate to work with many different team members during my time here. Everyone was very approachable and eager to help when I had questions. I also enjoyed that the leadership team made it a point to get to know all the interns even though we were only here for a short time.

Manav Shah — Engineering Intern

Tell us about yourself.

I am currently a senior at Michigan State University and majoring in mechanical engineering. My hobbies include volleyball, soccer and video games. Once I complete school, I would like to work in the automotive industry.

What is the most important lesson you learned at Neapco?

The most important lesson I’ve learned is to be adaptable. No matter what your original priorities were and what your initial project schedule was, the automotive industry is always changing and being able to not only anticipate that but also make adjustments when necessary is key.

What did you enjoy most about working at Neapco?

What I enjoyed most was working with a company that cares about the employees working for them. Neapco is truly one big family. And of course, I also really enjoyed checking out and driving the test vehicles.

Michael Maser — Engineering Intern

Tell us about yourself.

I’m from South Lyon, Michigan, and I will be starting my senior year at Michigan State University this fall. I am currently studying mechanical engineering.

How has your time at Neapco prepared you for success in your future career?

This year I’ve worked on a variety of different projects, ranging from tearing down parts to working on a test schedule that’s lasted for months. With everything I’ve worked on, I feel like I can solve any problem in the engineering field so long as I am open to learning and willing to put in the time and effort.

What did you enjoy most about working at Neapco?

Neapco had many opportunities to connect with the team. During these company events, I got to know my co-workers better and learn more about the role they play in their departments. We even got to play a round of golf together during one of the events — I don’t think it gets much better than that!

As we get ready to close out another summer, we are grateful to have welcomed another great group of summer interns as a part of our family. Our internship program continues to be a great tool for developing the next generation of automotive professionals, benefitting each intern — and the departments that have been home to them this summer.

We hope that this time together has been as positive and enjoyable for all of our interns as it has been for all of us in the Neapco Family. We wish all of our interns the best of luck going forward in their schooling and careers and hope to see some of them returning as permanent members of the Neapco Family in the near future.
